Walking with Wendy: From Graze to Porth & Back Again

Hello hello — Wendy here 👋

Its a bright and beautiful October morning here in Newquay and its a day for a brisk walk and lots of fresh air.

Today I’m taking you on one of my favourite seaside strolls, starting right outside Graze Tapas at 2 Beacon Road, Newquay, and striding out to Porth Beach before looping back. It’s a proper Cornish hike offering golden sands, harbour views, and that fresh Atlantic air that makes you feel alive.

 🍷 Starting at Graze Tapas

I generally meet friends at Graze, our cosy little spot above the harbour having grabbed a coffee before we start - a quick reminder — we don’t do morning coffee at Graze( sorry, early birds!) as we open Tuesday to Saturday, 5:30 pm – 10:00 pm for evening tapas and drinks. Perfect motivation to end your walk with us later!

You may have read that we’re proud supporters of the South West Coast Path — the beautiful trail that hugs the Cornish coastline and this walk hugs the route which makes it such a gem.

 🐟 Down the Harbour Steps

Head down from Beacon Road to the harbour steps and take a moment to soak up the scene — colourful fishing boats, sea air, and the odd seal popping up to say hello.

🏖 Across the Beaches (Tide Out!)

From the harbour, stroll across Towan Beach — you can’t miss the little island house perched high above the sand, one of Newquay’s most photographed spots.

When the tide’s out, keep going: you can wander right across Great Western Beach, Tolcarne, and all the way to Lusty Glaze. Each cove has its own charm:

Tip: Check the tide times before setting off — that beach route is only open at low tide! Newquay Tide Times | Tide Times

🌊 On the Coast Path to Porth

From Lusty, climb up to join the South West Coast Path. This stretch is pure Cornish magic — wide ocean views, seabirds circling, and wildflowers edging the cliffs.

As you near Porth, take a moment to enjoy the serenity of the bay. It’s one of Newquay’s quieter beaches, with a gentle tide and plenty of space to sit, breathe, and maybe enjoy an ice cream from one of the little cafés nearby.

If you’ve still got energy, a short detour to Porth Island (Trevelgue Head) rewards you with Iron Age history and sweeping sea views — just be careful on the bridge if it’s breezy!

 🌅 The Journey Back

You can retrace your steps along the SWCP, or take the gentler coastal road route back toward town. Either way, you’ll return to that familiar harbour view and the welcoming glow of Graze Tapas — ready for a well-earned glass of wine and a plate of something delicious.
